Why all my models look different.

3–5 minutes

In a world where visual media has a powerful influence on our self-perception, the importance of representation in photography cannot be overstated. The images we see shape our understanding of beauty, desirability, and worth. Unfortunately, many photographer portfolios in the kink, glamour and boudoir genres still predominantly feature a narrow range of body types and identities, often excluding those who don’t fit conventional standards.

Research has shown that representation in media plays a critical role in shaping self-esteem and body image. A study by the Dove Global Beauty and Confidence Report found that 69% of women and 65% of girls feel increasing pressures from media and advertising to reach an unrealistic standard of beauty, which impacts their self-esteem. When viewers don’t see themselves reflected in the media they consume, it can lead to feelings of insecurity and a diminished sense of self-worth.

The Impact of Limited Representation

When the website or Instagram pages of boudoir or glamour photographers only showcase thin, white women with solid D-cups and flat tummies, it sets an unrealistic and narrow standard of beauty. This exclusion can make viewers who don’t fit this mold feel insecure and unworthy. This not only impacts self-esteem but also discourages people from participating in photoshoots, fearing they won’t measure up to these standards.

At Swan’s Seduction, I’ve made it a mission to break away from the limiting norms of mainstream glamour and boudoir photography. I don’t want any woman or queer person to hesitate to book a session. Why should anyone feel excluded from the joy and empowerment of seeing themselves as sexy and beautiful?

This experience fueled my commitment to showcasing a diverse range of body types, ethnicities, and gender expressions in my portfolio. I want every person who visits my page to see someone who looks like them, to know they too can be celebrated in all their uniqueness. Everyone deserves to feel powerful and desirable, and representation is the first step toward making that a reality.

How I maintain a diverse portfolio

To make sure my portfolio truly shows the diversity of beauty, I actively look for models of different body types, ethnicities, and identities. If I see that many of my recent shoots feature thin, white models, even if they’re alternative with tattoos and colored hair, I make it a point to work with models who don’t fit this mold. It’s crucial to me that everyone feels represented in my work and sees their unique beauty highlighted.

Some shoot concepts actually look better with darker skin tones, bringing out a richness that lighter skin tones can’t. Certain poses also look more stunning on curvier bodies. Creating beautiful images with a diverse range of models isn’t hard; it just requires thinking beyond traditional beauty standards, like the Western male gaze we’re used to seeing as “sexy”. If you’re a photographer and you are only able to take good photos of slim white girls, you still have some practicing to do in my opinion.

Here are some steps I take to diversify my portfolio:

  1. Inclusive Casting Calls: I clearly state my commitment to diversity in casting calls, encouraging models of all backgrounds to apply. This invites a broader range of talent to join my projects.
  2. Tailored Shoot Concepts: I design shoot ideas that highlight the unique features of different models, using lighting and poses that best showcase their beauty.
  3. Community Engagement: I connect with diverse communities online and offline, attending events and joining forums that celebrate different identities. This helps me build relationships with a wide array of models.
  4. Feedback and Learning: I seek feedback from clients and models to understand their experiences. This helps me improve my approach and stay committed to diversity.

Representation in glamour, boudoir, and kink photography is not just about capturing beautiful images; it’s about making sure everyone sees themselves reflected and celebrated. By showcasing a diverse range of body types, ethnicities, and identities, we can help break down harmful beauty standards and promote a more inclusive view of beauty.

At Swan’s Seduction, I am committed to creating an inclusive and empowering space for all my clients. By actively seeking out diverse models and tailoring my shoots to highlight their unique features, I ensure that everyone can feel confident and beautiful.
